Where did you find this transcript? I've been trying to find the source material to judge for myself. It is now my opinion that this is NOT being blown over, that it is in fact very much WAY out of line.

OMG! I just read the whole transcript. I cannot believe that guy is supposed to be helping to lead the nation. I bet more of those old white republicans in DC are closet pervs. I love how on the news they are playing it off to be a teenage girl. I don't know many girls with a 7.5 inch penis. Unbelievable. I hope he does lots of time, but knowing Washington, he'll probably just pay a fine and retire to his hobby of internet prowling.
I use to live and work in DC (on the Hill 25+ years) and know for a fact that this IS a widespread problem. Say what you will, but those charged with maintaining our civil rights and liberties are the same ones who find loopholes to skirt around the law. Not to play the political blame game but why did the Repubs find it necessary to hide the fact that one of their own was prowling...didn't someone find it strange that a grown man was probing and why hasn't anyone asked whether there are MORE young men who have been approached? Someone pls have the BALLS to standup and asked the questions which need to be asked...they crucified Marion Barry, didn't they?

Beyond the mindset that allows grown men to engage in exchanges like Rep. Foley, what is almost more sickening is the spectacular imbalance of power, when pages wish not to come forward for fear of the possible impact to their future aspirations.
BTW, I'm not sure quite what to think of the NCMEC's official statement, which, somewhat to their credit, does now use stronger language, but it irks me that the page with the quick one-sentence blurb from the 29th has been removed entirely. Kudos for catching that, KatieG.

"In response to the numerous media inquiries we have received, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children is issuing the following statement regarding the resignation of Florida Congressman Mark Foley:
News reports regarding interactions over the Internet between former Congressman Mark Foley and Congressional pages are deeply troubling and convey strong suggestions of child sexual exploitation. NCMEC is not privy to the specific facts of the case and thus, it is inappropriate for NCMEC to comment or speculate about them.
Child sexual exploitation via the Internet has become an enormous problem, reaching into every aspect of society. It is imperative that every person become more vigilant and that we enhance steps to keep children safe online.
Congressman Foley has been an effective and dedicated Member of Congress. Nonetheless, if it is determined that he has engaged in acts which have harmed children or put them in jeopardy, like any other person, he must be held accountable. If he has violated the law, he should be prosecuted."
This reminds me at the writings of Marquis de Sade. This reassures me that he was right on when he portrayed people in power as closet perverts who also get off by stripping people of their rights.
